M 76, also known as the “Little Dumbell Nebula” or the “Butterfly Nebula” is a planetary type nebula that is approximately 3400 light years from Earth. The nebula has formed due to the central star ejecting its outer layers. The nebulosity of this object is estimated to extend 11.5 light years across.
